I get really sad because of how little people understand what it’s like to have anxiety. It’s even worse having people that you love make you feel like shit about it because you can’t always control how you react or what you’re feeling. It’s a really hard thing to feel all the time, and it wears me out a lot.
No one understands that we are the ones who suffer the most.
If you’re dating/close to someone with anxiety here are a few tips:- Don’t pressure them to make or keep plans with you. If I feel like I have an obligation, it makes me anxious and I want to bail.
- If they apologize to you for having anxiety, MAKE SURE you tell them it is NOT their fault in any way and you understand. If you don’t really understand it then shut up and just ask what you can do to make it better. If you can’t even bring yourself to do that then you and that person are not going to work out.
- Don’t ever get frustrated with someone who has anxiety or is in the middle of an attack. A lot of people don’t know the reason for their anxiety and you’re going to make it a hell of a lot worse.
- DON’T. I REPEAT. DO NOT make promises to an anxious person you can’t 100% for sure keep. We take that shit seriously and it affects our self-esteem when people bail.
- Keep your voice low / calm / caring when someone is having an anxiety attack, we sense other peoples feelings a whole lot easier and we can tell if you’re getting annoyed or frustrated. Help keep us calm.
- If we’re trying to tell you that we are nervous or anxious, please listen and pay attention to body language, because that may be an actual warning saying “I’m about to freak out and we need to leave this place”
- Understand that Anxiety comes in all different ways and you need to take the time to learn what triggers their anxiety and what you can do to help calm them down. There’s nothing worse than going through a panic attack alone, right beside the one you care about while they sit there, frustrated with you.
